Ok,.Lets start talking about Scat Pack jackets, and let begin on how they were obtained, and remembering just how popular ALL vinyl racing jackets were back around the late 60’s and early 70”s. So as we discussed earlier the scat pack was Chryslers way to market their performance vehicles by bundling them up into a group, Or “Pack”. And along with this they offered a club that you could join to get info about Dodge’s new line-up and performance parts for your vehicles, as well as any and all apparel. But what was not included in the Club membership (except for 71) was the official scat pack jacket. This is because these jackets were standalone items only. Which means they had to be ordered separately, and could not had been obtained any other way. They were NOT found on the clothes racks of Cover, Sears, Kmart, JC-penny, or any other department that you could have purchased other vinyl racing jackets or coats.
Official Dodge Scat Pack Jackets had to be obtained through mail order ONLY. Even if they were Dealership issued the Dealership had to have had ordered them through the mail or by phone. Either way they were shipped to the dealership. Now I can only assume that someone could have walked in off the street bought one of these jacket direct form the dealer, but a better guess would be that they were reserved for customers who purchased vehicles, either given to or offered to buy first.
In addition to dealership orders the jackets also could have been ordered by the general public, meaning anyone who was willing to fill out and mail in an ordering form to the Scat Pack headquarters in Detroit Michigan and mail it back with their $9.95 could have obtained a New Jacket a couple weeks later. These order form were found in Hot Rod Magazine, Scat Pack New catalogs, and of course as shown below “Dodge New Magazine”. So far all of my research has found that ordering through mail was the ONLY way that you could have gotten a New Official “Dodge Scat Pack Jacket “and would have held true from 1968 to the last year in 71 (for the scat pack) and 72 Non Scat pack.
Ok,..So lets look at some real Scat Pack jacket ordering forms………..Starting with the first one,…The 1968 Jacket….AKA the Zig Zag jacket.
Take notice to where your check or money order was Mailed to…..”Hughes-Hatcher-Suffrin”. This was the Manufacturer of ALL 68 to 70 scat Pack jackets, and to the best of my knowledge, until proven otherwise were the only Company manufacturing the Official Dodge Scat Pack Jacket. They were located to Detroit Michigan,…same area of the Scat Pack Headquarters.
..Now lets look at the 1969-early 70 jacket form, which by the way is the most popular and the most copied..….Here are some forms out of the Dodge New Magazine. It describes the New style jacket in a little bit of detail.
Again We see Hughes-Hatcher-Suffrin as being the recipient.
Now in addition to what I was able to find in magazines and the Dodge News Magazine, shown here is a very detailed piece of information …….This is Dealership order form for the Official 1969-70 Dodge Scat Pack Jacket and Shirts. These were for dealers only who would have purchased these jackets in bulk. They would bought large orders and either passed them out to customers buying car (from scat pack group) and or sold them out right. This form could have also been pass out to the customers who could have ordered on their own, but would have not gotten the special Dealer Price offer.
Here is the order form for the Late 1970 Jackets……
Two jackets were offered for the end of 1970, The Unlined version (similar in weight to the 69 style) and the Lined version which was more like a heavy Coat.
For 1971 the Scat Pack was Coming to a close. The membership form you see below actually included a Scat Pack Jacket. And Again a New Design for 71…..The last Year for the Scat Pack, but not for the Dodge Jacket.
The 71 Jacket was made out of a light weight material called Tyvek. This material was easily ripped and not many jacket survived. Payment was send to the Scat Pack Headquarters.
And here is the last order form I will show from 1972 Dodge News.
Even though the Scat Pack Club had now come to a close, Dodge continued for what I believe was one more year and offer these jackets.
Now we see a New Manufacturer come into play,…”The Great Lakes Sportswear Ind”
I have reason to believe that The Great Lakes company was also responsible for manufacturing the Late 1970’s two version Style Scat pack jackets as well. Which I’ll try to explain in further pages.
If you have any information that relates to ordering forms or how these jacket were obtained, Please feel free to contact me so that I may add it to the site.
Now Lets take a look at some original jackets, and we will start with the next page…”The 1968 Jacket”
